The Awakening Interfaith Spiritual Community is an independent Kriya Yoga ministry affiliated with the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment (CSE), San Jose, CA.  Our ministry with the Awakening community carries on the vision of individual and planetary awakening to the One Truth known by many names.

In 1998, while in seminary Reverend Nancy Ballinger began teaching How to Meditate classes, and leading weekly Meditation Groups locally on the central coast. After her graduation and ordination in 2000, she began Living the Eternal Way classes with over 50 people completing the first courses, including a group at the California Men's Colony. In 2001 we became known as The Center for Spiritual Enlightenment, Morro Bay.

As the teachings of The Eternal Way and Kriya Yoga grew, the interest in this interfaith ministry blossomed into a spiritual community. In January 2004 we received our 501(c) 3 tax-exempt status from the IRS and the State of California. At that time, with the blessing of CSE, we stepped forward and established the name Awakening Interfaith Spiritual Community.

At the end of 2013, Reverend Ballinger retired and Yogacharya O’Brian sent Reverend Devin Kent Sodt to be our next Spiritual Director.  Rev. Sodt has deepened our roots in the teachings of Kriya Yoga.  The insight and wisdom of his teachings have enriched us all.

In June of 2016 we left our longtime home in Morro Bay to new our new home in Los Osos, where the Awakening community has continued to grow and deepen.

In March of 2017 Reverend Sodt returned to CSE to head up a new ministry there and newly ordained Nita Kenyon began as the Spiritual Director for the Awakening ministry.

Awakening provides a welcoming home for all seekers of Truth to gather for study, prayer, meditation, community meals and warm hearted fellowship and conversation.
